The Technology Behind Disney’s Club Penguin

Summary: Lane Merrifield, co-founder of Club Penguin and now a Disney exec, talks infrastructure, a social networking overhaul and a new round of features for the site with 150 million registered users.

If you have kids at home you’ve probably heard about Club Penguin, a massively multi-player online role-playing game that was acquired by Disney in 2007 for $350 million.

Lane Merrifield, co-founder of Club Penguin and now a Disney exec, said the site, which launched in 2005, was “engineered without expecting big success.” Merrifield said he was hoping for about 1,000 users. In the first few months of Club Penguin’s existence, the site jumped from 5,000 to 25,000 users. By then it was clear that Merrifield’s aim to simply “break even someday” wasn’t ambitious enough.

Now Club Penguin has 150 million registered users around the world.

That infrastructure, which enables children to jump around to different servers to build igloos, decorate them and collect virtual coins, largely remains intact. Club Penguin remains a Flash-based site and even calls its various locales servers.

Underneath the hood, Club Penguin is undergoing a dramatic change. “We’re rebuilding the entire world on a different technical infrastructure,” said Merrifield. On Thursday, Club Penguin started to roll out new chat and friends tools that will be available to all users in the weeks to come.

Club Penguin’s new chat system is built on six years of player behavior and includes a database of 300,000 approved phrases in four languages. This patented chat system supports 56 million messages a day.

This infrastructure has to support:

10,000 emails a day from kids.
200 people worldwide that answer those emails personally in four different languages.
A cutting edge kid-safe messaging system complete with filters and translation capability.
25 million Puffles.
950,000 blog posts.
Subscriptions.
Chat logs.
And a new translation service so kids can talk to each other around the globe in their native tongue.

I caught up with Merrifield to talk shop in an interview that had my two daughters (penguins, right) stoked about what I do for the first time since—well ever.

Here’s the recap:

The strategy: Club Penguin is a subscription service that has been profitable since its early days. Merrifield’s aim is simple, but difficult to pull off: Provide social networking experiences for children, who engage in different ways than adults do on Facebook. On Club Penguin, play is front and center. “Kids don’t socialize the way adults do on Facebook,” said Merrifield. “They want to play. It’s like when you give your kids a gift and the cardboard box becomes the main attraction. The goal here is to give the kids the best cardboard box, best markers and scissors so they can play games and role play.” These kids bug their parents for subscriptions and they ultimately cave. Trust me, the model works well.

Customer support: Merrifield has a network of 200 workers trained to moderate chats and ensure safety for the young users. These workers are housed in seven offices around the world. Club Penguin has four languages covered—English, Spanish, Portuguese and French—with a fifth on deck. These moderators are also trained to play Club Penguin’s iconic characters—Captain Rockhopper, Aunt Arctic, Sensei and Gary the Gadget Guy. Merrifield said each of the game’s key characters have humans behind them—much like Mickey and Minnie Mouse at Disney World. The characters roam and kids flock to them. “We could do AI (artificial intelligence), but real humans give a better experience,” said Merrifield. “It can’t be AI when a kid asks ‘are you real?'”

Business intelligence: Club Penguin has a home-grown dashboard in its customer support tools to monitor trends, emerging expressions and collect data. “Different trends pop. We use BI from a data perspective as well as anecdotally,” said Merrifield. “By watching play you get both quantitative and qualitative data. It always baffles us how kids can create.” The information, which is only used internally, spots trends in igloo design—things like Sept. 11, 2001 memorials and references to Japan’s earthquake earlier this year. This intelligence is used to create the Club Penguin Times, which has a bigger circulation than the New York Times, and improve filtering.

Safety and security: For Club Penguin to exist, safety is everything. Regulations on targeting children and the filtering necessary means that many companies have avoided targeting an audience under 13. “We modify filters 100 times a week,” said Merrifield. Why? That’s how fast pop culture can change. Club Penguin’s filtering system is based on white lists—phrases that are approved. The trick for Club Penguin is discovering new references. For instance, the word lollipop can be fine one day and then be deemed inappropriate when used in a rap song. Context is critical. “Our filtering system has a heavy dose of tech, but we’ve never found a technology that can replace human moderators,” said Merrifield. “There are just too many nuances.” Like most of its systems, Club Penguin’s filtering system is proprietary. The Disney unit has nine filed patents on the system and keeps five years of chat logs. “It’s the most advanced online communication tool for kids,” said Merrifield.

Communications enhancements: The new version of Club Penguin’s chat system will enable predictive text and typing. That should allow children under nine to communicate better. “Users 4, 5 and 6 don’t chat with each other,” said Merrifield. “Version two will get used to the player and allow them to click through a sentence and say more than before at the speed of reading not typing.” The real innovation is that once a phrase is added to the supported phrase list it can be used multiple languages because it is given a numerical value. The future will include a system that acts as a translator where a user speaking English can converse with a pal in French without every knowing the difference. “They will be on the same servers, but speaking in their native language,” said Merrifield. “Kids can grow up with no language barrier.” To accomplish this feat, Merrifield said Club Penguin separated chat from the game itself.

The server setup: Merrifield couldn’t go into much detail on his infrastructure, but Club Penguin operations on data centers around the world and deploys a cloud computing set-up. “We didn’t call it cloud when we started, but it was the only way to do it,” he said.

The use of Flash: When Merrifield started Club Penguin, the site used Flash 6. “Back then Flash 6 was a banner ad technology, but it was the only thing that could do what we needed,” he said. Adobe has propelled it forward. Club Penguin will continue to use Flash because HTML 5 is still young and needs more additions to support Club Penguin. Nevertheless, Club Penguin will be moving more toward HTML 5 while continuing to use Flash.

Expansion: Merrifield said being part of Disney typically means properties and characters go trans-media. Club Penguin so far has avoided massive commercial expansion, but there are experiments underway. Club Penguin is starting to get plugs on the Disney Channel and there are short cartoons. It’s also likely Puffles and Club Penguin characters also are starting to appear in real world environments. I won’t be shocked at all to see a Club Penguin presence at Disney World in a few years.

Social networking for kids: Today, Club Penguin requires kids to hop to various servers to explore. That process will become easier. Merrifield said the server terminology may be toned down a bit (even though I think it’s comical to hear my 4 year old talk servers). Merrifield said that a new friend list will make it easier to find characters and catch up with playmates for a little card jitsu. The audience is also getting a bit older—13, 14 and 15 year olds will serve as guides for younger siblings and wind up playing again. In the latest social enhancements, Club Penguin will allow for fully customized penguin avatars, best friend tagging, tools for finding friends and a feature to eliminate penguins from your computer screen.

On apps and being cutting edge: Club Penguin has stepped up its app push in the last six months and its Puffle Launch is an iTunes hit. Club Penguin has apps on iOS and is planning ones for Android. “We move when trends reach a certain size and penetration,” said Merrifield. “We were a little late with iOS, but we’re dealing with the kids space. HTML 5 may not work because they may not have the latest browser. Kids are not bleeding edge and often have a hand-me-down from a parent.” How does Club Penguin know when to go app happy? The kids community starts talking about Apple products a lot. “We track trends and in the last six months we heard a lot of kids asking for iPod Touches and iPads for Christmas,” said Merrifield. Whatever Club Penguin does the apps can’t be buggy because the site has a lot of trust with its customers. One reason Android apps will follow iOS versions is the testing requirements. Club Penguin has to test its apps on multiple versions of Android and devices.

Design simplicity: One of Merrifield’s biggest challenges is making Club Penguin simpler to play. Club Penguin tests technologies and designs at boys and girls clubs. “We put it in front of kids and just watch,” said Merrifield. Club Penguin had to make its igloo designs easier to use. Igloos are customized by kids—it’s a virtual equivalent of the cardboard box that winds up getting a lot of love.

Registering And Logging In

How to Register an Account:

Logging into the snow covered island isn’t too hard, but you just need to find your way through. To start off, you need to register an account. You can do this by going to the play Club Penguin page and then clicking on “Create a Penguin.” You should find this button near the bottom left corner.

After you do this, you will see a page with some blank fields. In this fields you will enter things such as your username, password, email, and color. However, to complete registration, you need to click on the two check boxes at the end. By clicking on those boxes, you are saying that you agree to the Club Penguin Rules.

After you fill all of the fields out and press submit, you will find a message telling you to check your email. This is because you need to activate your account, and when you do, you will be able to log into the island of Club Penguin. It’s as simple as that.

Once you get the activation email, click on the activate button. After this, the rest of the steps are pretty self explanatory. You will need to select the type of chat you want and you will need to agree to the rules once again.

How to Login to Club Penguin:

Logging into Club Penguin is a pretty simple process. To begin, you need to access the same URL, but this time click on the button that says “Login.” If you are having trouble with this, we have provided you with a picture of it below. Once you do this, we can continue on to the next step of logging in.

In the next screen, you will be prompted to enter your username and password. You can also select the option for if you want to stay logged in. Do not tell it to remember your password if you are on a public computer. This can cause your penguin to be hacked easily.

Once you fill everything out, click on login. After that, you will see the server selection page. Click on any one of the servers to login to the island. The more bars a specific server has, the more users are on it.

Then, after you have successfully logged into a server, you will find that you are in the Welcome Room. This room will only be accessed once, and that is when you log into Club Penguin for the first time. This is how it looks.

When you have finished the tutorial, you are free to enter the island to waddle around and meet new friends

Making Friends

Be Friendly! So walk up to them, and say something like,”Hello!” Don’t start off with a compliment. They might be thinking you just like their outfit.

Use some menu chat! Menu chat was created to make friends. So use it!

Send postcards! Send some like, “I like your outfit,” or “Cool Puffle!”

When you get to know them, ask if they want to be your buddy. Don’t just send a request. Ask them. You can now have unlimited buddies also!

If they say yes, do something together! Go to the Pizza Parlor, play Find Four, go to a party, anything! This will make you very good friends.

Clothing

Clothes, or clothing, are optional items that penguins can wear. Most clothes can only be purchased by members, but non-members can still obtain partyitems, unlock items from the Treasure Book and also buy certain clothing items. Clothes can be bought in some catalogs, including catalogs that are available during special occasions. Clothing items are stored in the inventory, where the players can use items they have previously obtained, and wear other items. Clothing are removed by clicking the item on the penguin in its player card

Part 8

Buddy List

A Buddy is a penguin that another penguin has added to their Buddy List because they are friends with each other. The word “buddy” is just a different way of saying “friends”, as most online games have a “friend” status rather than a buddy status. They are classed as ‘friends’. Players can ask to be someone’s buddy by clicking on the other penguin’s player card, then clicking on the smiley face on the bottom left of their Player Card. A pop-up box appears, which has two options: Yes and No. By clicking yes, one will become their buddy. Clicking no means you do not wish to be their buddy, and thus, they are not added to your buddy list. An envelope appears when they have answered your request. The limited allowance of buddies is 100, but there was a glitch that allowed players to have even more buddies, although it is now fixed by the Club Penguin Team. If a person deletes you from their buddy list, they will be removed from your buddy list as well. In October 28, 2011, the buddy list was upgraded to have 500 friends/buddies and it is now possible to add Famous Penguins.

When Your Buddies Are On a Server

Becoming a buddy of another penguin is a useful thing. Players can locate where their buddy is by clicking on their player card (via the buddy list), then clicking on the “Find” button. Buddies are represented by smiley faces while choosing which server to enter when logging in. When a server has a Smiley Face rather than the default blue neutral face, it means a buddy is online on said server. However, it is not possible to discuss with buddies between servers, only directly within a room. However, Billybob has mentioned on the CP Blog that they are working on a way to create this function.

In October 2011, the ability to add Famous Penguins was added. On Famous Penguins playercards, you may now add them and get their background or whatever free item they may be giving out. Gary was the first famous penguin you could add in Club Penguin.

Club Penguin Music

There are various types of music that are played in most areas of Club Penguin. Some rooms always have music, like the Pizza Parlor, while sometimes rooms have music for special occasions only. Igloos and Games have music as well. Most pieces of music lasts about 30-50 seconds, and are looped.

In 2012, Club Penguin started making real songs, for the Make Your Mark: Ultimate Jam, Adventure Party: Temple of Fruit, Halloween Party 2012, Holiday Party 2012 and Puffle Party 2013 These songs last about two or three minutes and are posted as Club Penguin Shorts on their YouTube channel.

In June 2013, the song I’ve Been Delayed was available for playing in igloos.

Emoticons

Emoticons or Emotes are faces and symbols that can show how Penguins feel. They usually appear in speech bubbles accessed by clicking on the “Emote Menu” or by pressing “E”, followed by various keys what are usually the first letter of the noun.

The “Skull emotion” was removed, along with the heart emote [1] – however, due to popular demand, the heart emote came back a month later. According to Club Penguin: “There are plenty of other ways to show you don’t like something besides using the skull.” One of them could be the tongue emote. There is also a special sun emote which can be found by pressing E and D together. There is also a special tooting emote which can also be found by pressing E and T.

Swf List – Exploring & Testing

An .swf (“Shockwave Flash” or “Small Web Format”) file is a flash extension file used by the Club Penguin Team when designing rooms, player cards, penguins, games, etc. When you open a .swf room, no penguins appear, because it is just a local .swf file. Club Penguin is made with Adobe Flash. All penguins in .swf’s are dark black because it is the default color. It is a storage link for item, music, and more id’s.

Every room on Club Penguin has a swf name, which normally is slightly different from the room name. The swf name is the file name of the room, as well as the reference code for that room in Club Penguin’s files.

Membership

Penguins who have Membership can dress up in various clothing that are for members and non-members, decorate their igloo, adopt up to 20 puffles, have more choices, be able to enter rooms or servers that are full to non-members, and go to exclusive parties. Members can get clothes not only from the Gift Shop, but if they are EPF agents, then they can buy clothes from the Elite Gear. Also, if they are Ninja, they can get ninja furniture, buy a Hand Gong, and get a Ninja Costume from the Martial Artworks catalog. Simply, a membership results in many additional features. The main countries for membership are the US, Canada, India, the UK, and Australia. When a player becomes a member, a “Member Badge” will appear in the upper left corner of their Player Card. Member Badges can vary according to how long you have been a member on Club Penguin.

Member Badge Stripe Code :

1 – 6 Months: The regular member badge. 7 – 12 Months: The regular member badge with a blue stripe under it. 13 – 18 Months: Same as previous badge, but with a orange stripe above the blue. 19 – 24 Months: Another stripe is added, between the blue and orange one, a white stripe. 24 + Months: same as 19 – 24 months but with a star in the middle of the stripes. People in other countries can still buy membership. The USD currency will be converted into their country’s currency once bought

There are three options to choose from – the monthly installment, the 6-month installment or the annual installment. The annual option is cheaper over a long term period; however, many users prefer to use Monthly, as they can cancel it after any period. On July 13, 2011, Club Penguin increased all membership prices. Memberships can be purchased online (as can gift certificates), or residents of the United States and the United Kingdom may purchase a membership card.

Moderators

Moderators (aka CSR which is the abbreviation of “Client Support Representative”) are the people who work for Club Penguin and help keep it safe by banning players who have broken the rules. There are over 200 moderators worldwide. Five of the most known moderators are Billybob, Rsnail, Happy77, Gizmo, and Screenhog. Club Penguin moderators used to have a moderator badge on the upper-right corner of their Player Card, but this was taken off so moderators can be undercover. To become a Moderator, one must live near any Club Penguin office or headquarters, and be over 18 years of age. The badge is identical to the letter “M” at the upper-right corner of the screen. Getting banned by a moderator is when you get a warning that you are breaking the Club Penguin rules and the moderators kicks you out of the server.

There are over 200 moderators supervising Club Penguin. There are 68 known moderators; 6 have retired. To become a moderator, you must be over 18 years old and live in or near any Club Penguin staff offices worldwide. The moderators aren’t allowed to give out their penguin’s names and many of them have more than one penguin. Most of the moderators sit in the room without interacting with any players and just watch for players who are breaking the Club Penguin Rules.

I don’t understand how Rsnail can be retired… I friended him a few days ago, and that was in 2014. How can he still be waddling around if he’s retired? And, yes, he has the same outfit when I view him on my friends list.
